This also enables equitable, culturally competent care to meet patients’ individual needs.Īt Ascension, we are focused on creating a culture that appreciates and elevates the principles of Appreciation, Belongingness, Inclusivity, Diversity and Equity, for which Martha stood. Martha and her colleagues understood cultural diversity ensures clinicians from all backgrounds are represented, to help alleviate healthcare disparities and improve healthcare outcomes for our diverse patient populations. Along with other pioneers like Mary Eliza Mahoney, Estelle Massey Osborne, and Adah Belle Samuel Thoms, Martha advocated for racial equality in nursing, for improved training for Black nurses, and for the cultivation of leaders from within the Black nursing community. One of these was Martha Minerva Franklin, who founded the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses. I celebrate Black History Month by reflecting on the many Black nurses throughout history who have been torchbearers for our entire nursing profession. Our nursing community is truly at the heart of our Mission! #nurses #communityįounder of the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses The patient commended Miles and Stacey for treating her with respect and dignity and giving her hope for her recovery after a complex heart surgery. A patient took the time to recognize the incredible care she received by nominating her nurse, Miles Downing (second photo), for a DAISY Award, and her patient care technician, Stacey Lazzell (final photo), for a BEE Award. We saw another amazing example at Ascension St. The nursing team, (from left to right) Shania Claybrooks, PCT, Kateresa Kirby, RN, and Ahmed Ahmed, exercise physiologist, worked together to reunite them in the hospital and get them both back to health (first photo). Recently, at Ascension Saint Thomas Heart West in Nashville, two sisters-in-law who had not seen each other in two years found themselves both recovering from heart conditions at the same time. Our nursing community not only delivers high quality, evidence-based, personalized and compassionate care, they also offer empathy, listening and hope for our patients, which is imperative for those undergoing life-changing heart surgery and treatment. Happy American Heart Month! I am so proud of and grateful for all nurses and nursing support professionals across Ascension who provide exceptional cardiovascular care.
