("NAND" is the generic term for the flash-memory chips that make up the actual storage on the SSD the term refers, technically, to the type of logic gates used in the underlying memory structure. M.2 drives are as utilitarian as upgrades come: They look like sticks of gum studded with NAND modules and a controller chip. The drives would be smaller, potentially more capacious, and, most important, not necessarily reliant on SATA. As it took shape, though, it took on its current, final name: M.2. During development, it was known as NGFF, for "Next-Generation Form Factor," a name that still lingers here and there. But it's definitely a fading form factor, and mSATA saw only slight adoption on desktop systems.Įven in mSATA's heyday, though, a replacement was in the works. Now, mSATA drives still linger on the market, primarily because some laptop models adopted the form factor years back, and residual demand exists as capacity upgrades. mSATA was also unusual in that it piggybacked on an existing connector, known as Mini-PCI, often used for installing small onboard components such as compact Wi-Fi cards. The mSATA drive also draws all the power it needs through the slot.īy being reliant on SATA, mSATA drives gained all of the advantages and limitations of that interface, including the upper speed limit of SATA 3.0, the latest revision of Serial ATA. The interface on the drive end is an edge connector on the PCB, as opposed to the usual SATA cabling. As the name suggests, the slot is a conduit to the Serial ATA bus in the system. (Most mSATA drives relevant to upgraders measure about 1 by 2 inches.) mSATA drives fit into a special slot in a laptop's logic board or on a PC motherboard. The boiled-down essence of an SSD with the shell removed, an mSATA drive is a bare, rectangular circuit board. The first attempt was a new form factor called mini-SATA, or mSATA. Why not design around that? Thus the M.2 form factor was born. So when mobile-device designers, challenged with slimming down laptops and tablets, reassessed this issue, the consensus was clear: The bulky 2.5-inch form factor, eventually, would have to go.Īt the core, an SSD is just a thin circuit board studded with flash-memory and controller chips. It's designed in that 2.5-inch size and shape to make the drive fit into those existing bays. The enclosure an SSD comes in has a lot of dead space inside. However, from an engineering point of view, SSDs didn't need to be that big. Over time, too, desktop PC chassis have evolved to gain their own bays and mounting points for 2.5-inch drives. You could mount them in a 3.5-inch drive bay using a simple bracket, or even just using alternate mounting holes in those same spots. (They could configure laptops with the choice of a hard drive or an SSD without any retooling.) Desktop PCs, meanwhile, could accommodate SSDs of this size with little fuss. SSD makers adopted this standard size to make SSDs compatible with existing laptop designs. (In actuality, the drives are about 2.75 inches wide.) These SSDs have the same dimensions that laptop-style hard drives do. The traditional SSD that you buy and install in a desktop PC, or in place of a hard drive in a laptop, uses what's known as the "2.5-inch drive" form factor.

We've developed an online password generator to help you keep your private information secure. Any hacker using a traditional desktop computer would have the opportunity to test billions of different passwords in several seconds. It’s the perfect way to protect yourself from data breaches and annoying spam.Computers can quickly and easily guess passwords. These are unique, automatically generated email addresses that keep your real one private from the services you sign up for, while still sending emails to your Fastmail inbox. If you use 1Password and Fastmail, you can create your online accounts with Masked Email. Many services will use your email address as the username. That way, your privacy is protected, and you can rest easy knowing that you’re practicing good cybersecurity habits. How do I create a unique username?ġPassword’s Random Username Generator is the best way to create random, unique usernames for your online accounts. If you’re using a strong username, you only need to change it if you think it’s been compromised. You can easily remember unique, random usernames by storing them in a password manager like 1Password. Instead, focus on picking the right username in the first place. Some platforms won’t let you update your username without contacting customer support anyway. You don’t need to change all of your usernames on a regular basis to keep your accounts safe. So steer clear of words and numbers related to your name, date of birth, and other real-life information. And random means that a criminal won't be able to guess it. A unique username is one you haven't used elsewhere. But if it’s a private account, you’re better off choosing a username that’s unique and random. If you’re signing up for a game streaming platform like Twitch, you likely want a username that’s memorable and easy to spell. Unique usernames can also be helpful if you want to create a secondary account – where you can browse or post with more freedom – on social media apps such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube. You may wish to stay anonymous on Reddit, Twitter, Discord, Tumblr, and other platforms that people use to discuss a wide range of topics. You also need a handle for online video games like Fortnite, Roblox, and Minecraft, as well as popular gaming platforms including Twitch, Steam, and Xbox. Movie and TV streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Max require an account with a username and password. Random and unique usernames can also help you stay safe on privacy-focused chat apps. You may want the same handle for your social media accounts, but that doesn’t mean you should be using it to log in to your private bank account.
The top of mine was just a 1/16 of an inch narrower than the bottom.Ĭut the next two top furring strips to fit your dimensions. The dimension can be different and since it is a snug fit you need to get it right. Now measure the distance between the 1 x 2 strips already screwed on. I spaced them so they would fall close to the center of the boards underneath. I used 1 1/4″ screws in black so they would be dark like the wood. Once you get the furring strip all lined up on the edge of your boards, then screw it down. I used a well worn old paint brush to apply the glue.īe careful not to get too much on it, you really don’t want the glue squishing out when you screw the furring strip to the boards. I stained the boards with MinWax Dark Walnut stain before I cut them. Oh, did I fail to mention I stained the wood? I applied a good amount of wood glue to the unstained back side of the furring strips. I used 1 x 2 furring strips to make the frame and cut 2 the same dimension as the boards combined height which ended up being just a hair shorter than 18 inches. I started the top with a 1 x 4 then used 2 -1 x 6’s, then the last is a 1 x 4. I chose that number as I thought that was what the dimension of the boards stacked together would equal but once I got them all attached it only came to a wee bit under 18″, I was going for a square but since this is not rocket science or brain surgery a bit off is just fine by me. They are supposed to mimic the ends of a wood crate. Not because they were hard, not at all, it is just that life happens.įirst I am going to share how I built the faux crate type surface. It took me a while to get these done, much longer than I really wanted…. Gardening and Painting so building these Faux Vintage Crate signs was pure joy. I can’t really explain why I enjoy it so much…īut it just might be because it combines two of my favorite activities… Just Google ‘vintage seed packet art’ and you will get an eyeful of colorful and fun images. Governance can fail dismally even while the formal state remains intact. Yet there is an important, albeit often unrecognized, distinction between failed states and failed governance. In other words, the Westphalian order is undergoing a long-term secular decline that is bringing with it a series of convulsions along with what Nathan Freier terms, “prolific insecurity.” 3 This does not mean that the state is going away anytime soon the state remains critical in defining political order, and will continue to play much of that role for the foreseeable future. Underlying this panorama of actors, and somewhat obscured by the current crises and tensions, is a fundamental global trend in which the nature of governance provided by many states is inadequate and unable to meet the needs, demands, and expectations of their citizens. military planning with its focus on gray zones, irregular operations, and hybrid enemies, as well as its reliance on technological superiority to provide what has been characterized as the “third offset.” 2 Such complexities and uncertainties are increasingly reflected in current U.S. Both Iraq and Afghanistan have revealed that favorable power asymmetries do not guarantee victory, that military power often matters less than political resilience, and that even political success can prove impossible to sustain. At the same time, VNSAs add elements of fluidity and unpredictability, complicating state calculations and rendering desired outcomes uncertain. This is a complex picture in which states, at the very least, remain the major players, and often set the frameworks within which VNSAs operate. In other words, traditional geopolitics is alive and well, but is sharing the stage with a variety of new players that are useful to states but are not necessarily or not fully under state control. Moreover, at times, its close relationship with Pakistani intelligence and military services has hindered efforts to improve relations between India and Pakistan. 1 The relationship is symbiotic and D-Company enjoys a high degree of impunity, while continuing to profit from its extensive portfolio of transnational criminal activities. The organization also provides plausible deniability for ISI and for Pakistan, in return for which Pakistan provides sanctuary and protection. Indeed, D-Company is used by ISI to provide money and logistic support for terrorist actions against India, and for assistance in introducing counterfeit currency into India. In South Asia, D-Company, the criminal organization led by Dawood Ibrahim, is closely allied with Pakistan’s intelligence agency, Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI). On the contrary, they generate their own conflict dynamics and follow strategic imperatives that sometimes complement the actions of their state allies, but, on other occasions, can equally well confound them. They might, on occasion, act as state proxies but, they are not pawns. These VNSAs pursue their own agendas, yet interact and ally with states when it is convenient and advantageous to do so. States in the Middle East, for example, increasingly define national interests in terms of sectarianism however, the civil war in Islam is being played out not only in the direct, competitive dynamic of Saudi Arabia and Iran, but also through the proxies these two states use, including sectarian factions, tribes, warlords, insurgents, and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs). The world has entered a period of kaleidoscopic, irregular conflicts in which the reassertion of traditional geopolitical rivalries is inextricably linked with the activities of a bewildering assortment of violent nonstate actors (VNSAs). In exchange for a premium, your insurance company will provide you with six different types of coverage, which make up your homeowners insurance policy:ĭwelling protection (similar to hazard coverage). “If you have questions on what is and isn’t included in your policy, connect with your insurance agent to confirm what supplemental coverage you might need to ensure your home is fully protected,” says Steve Wilson, director of technical underwriting at Hippo Insurance. A peril is an insurance term for an event that caused damage, and a covered peril is a damage specifically included in your policy’s coverage terms. Homeowners insurance is designed to help you pay for damages to your property or belongings that occur as a result of a covered peril. Let’s take a deeper look at what homeowners and hazard insurance coverage have in common-and also what they don’t. It is intended to help you cover the costs of damages to your home caused by a natural or man-made disaster, like a house fire or hail storm. Then there’s hazard insurance, which is included in your standard homeowners insurance policy. But it also helps pay for medical bills following an accident that occurred on your property, or for additional living expenses if your home is completely destroyed in a covered incident. Homeowners insurance is a type of insurance that’s designed to provide financial protection against damages to your home or belongings. Understanding how they are related and what they cover can help you make a more informed decision about what coverage you need to fully protect your home. When purchasing a home or shopping for a lower insurance premium, your mortgage lender may require you to maintain a minimum level of homeowners and hazard insurance, which are two common types of coverage offered by home insurance companies. Crushed stone usesĬrushed stones’ most popular use is building and construction. There are sizes for large projects, lining waterbodies, making pavers, and so on. The specific application depends on the gravel size or grade. There are numerous uses of crushed stones and gravel. Pea gravel is about ¾ inches in size, while crushed stones are anything from screenings to 2-inch rocks. The difference between crushed stone and pea gravel is the same as gravel and crushed stones. They vary according to the color of the parent rock, i.e., brown, black, gold, copper, blue, yellow, greenish, etc. Some gravel colors include yellow, white, black, blue, beige, blue, gray, and beige. Vary depending on the constituent rock that weathered. Sizes vary from screenings (less than a ¼ an inch to riprap whose sizes are grade 1 (12 ″-18″) and grade 2 (18 ″-24″). Therefore, although different in how they are made, there are instances when these two terms mean the same thing Crushed stone vs. However, it is worth noting that in the US, gravel and crushed stones mean any rock less than two inches in size but is coarser than sand (0.0625 o 2 millimeters). Their only difference is appearance and how they form. From the above discussion, these two are similar products and have some similar uses. However, you will find crushed sandstone, slate, dolomite, marble, quartz, etc.įinally, like gravel, they are categorized into different grades depending on their size, and each of these sizes has unique uses. Manufacturers use different rocks to make them.Ĭommonly used stones are limestone, granite, dolomite, and trap rock (basalt, gabbro, peridotite, and diabase). Therefore, you expect them to have angular, sharp, and jagged edges. Typical primary crushers are jaw and gyratory, while secondary/tertiary crushers include cone, impact (hammer), and roll crushers.
